On April 3, 2017, the University of North Carolina Tarheels avenged themselves for last year’s heartbreaking championship loss to Villanova. UNC defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs by a score of 71 – 65, to take home the NCAA Men’s National Championship. After an undefeated regular season, this was Gonzaga’s first trip to the championship game, though last year the team made it to the final four.

With his team up by one, the Tarheels’ senior forward Isaiah Hicks connected on a tightly contested shot in the paint with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to extend their lead to three. On their next possession, UNC’s Kennedy Meeks, also a senior forward, blocked a shot which led to a breakaway dunk by junior forward Justin Jackson. After all of the crazy upsets and endings during this year’s March Madness, the tournament ended with two teams that were fan favorites.
