FSPS Holds ESL Graduation April 20

The Fort Smith Public Schools annual ESL graduation was held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 20 at the Kimmons Junior High School gymnasium, 2201 North 50th St.

Susan Boone, Supervisor of Special Programs for the district, welcomed guests. Nationally-recognized bilingual educator Jo Gusman was the guest speaker.

Newly-minted school superintendent Dr. Doug Brubaker was on hand to award over 300 certificates of achievement to the district’s English Language Learners (ELLs) who attained proficiency in English as a second language.

Ramsey students who “exited,” or graduated from the ELL program were the following: Anthony Alexander Hernandez, Joanna Hernandez, Laila Kannout, Alriel Moreno, Nhu Pham, Vy Pham, Nathalie Pineda, Eliana Ramirez, and Athziri Romero. Seventh graders Anthony Hernandez and Vy Pham both attended the ceremony and had their picture taken with Dr. Brubaker.

Ramsey ELL teacher Melissa Bonar said, “This was a very impressive ceremony. The gymnasium was packed with proud ESL students and their families.”

The program was titled, “Journey to Proficiency Celebration” and was primarily organized by the Parker Center employees of Fort Smith Public Schools.

Refreshments were served following the nearly two-hour ceremony.
