A Memorial for a Fallen Officer

By: Maddie Pillstrom

On April 22 at 9 A.M., workers from Ashland Inc.’s Fort Smith-based location were hard at work at their partner school Fairview Elementary School.

The group of volunteers worked for an hour and a half in the chilling temperatures, planting trees and rose bushes for Officer William Cooper’s memorial.

Officer Cooper was shot in the neck after he and other officers responded to a domestic call near Greenwood. After several surgeries, he was pronounced dead on Aug. 10, 2016, at 1:15 p.m.

In addition to making the memorial beautiful with the several trees and rose bushes planted for the fallen officer, Jennifer Padgett, a volunteer, told her son,

“We are helping the Earth breath better.”
