Student Walkout

Student Walkout

Staff Writer

Students across the country walked out of their classrooms for 17 minutes yesterday at 10:00  AM in their respective time zones. The walkout was prompted by the most recent school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida one month ago.

The protests ranged from silence to reading out the names of those who lost their lives, and some spelling out the word “enough” on a football field. Several schools in Fort Smith participated, including Ramsey Junior High, Southside, and Northside. In Fort Smith, there were no negative consequences for students who chose to participate in this event, though some districts chose to issue detentions or absences for those who took part. Some students said the walkout was to call for stricter gun laws while others said it was to honor the fallen.
