A Bicentennial Celebration

A Bicentennial Celebration

Nicole Radson

Fort Smith is 200 years old! Last December, Fort Smith began celebrating its bicentennial. The celebration lasts from December 25, 2017, to December 25 of this year. There are many activities going on until the end of the year. For instance, the 7th Annual Regional Veterans Day Parade at Chaffee Crossing Historic District will be held on Saturday, November 10 at noon. The theme for the parade is 200 Years of Fort Smith’s Military History.

January through March were Arts and Culture months, where the past, present, and future of Fort Smith was celebrated with artifacts from the various Fort Smith museums. April through June were Fort Smiths Western Heritage months; celebrating what makes Fort Smith the Top True Western Town. July through September were Homecoming months. Those with a rich family heritage in Fort Smith were encouraged to plan reunions, and those who were born and raised here were welcomed back to see all the changes the city has undergone. October through December will be the Future of Fort Smith. During this time explore what the future holds for the city and its residents.
