On January 29. actor Jussie Smollett (“Empire”) reported to Chicago Police that he was assaulted near his Chicago apartment. According to Smollet, the two men who attacked him shouted racial and homophobic slurs at him. Over two weeks later, Smollett is now in custody for filing a false police report as investigators suspect that Smollett was either lying about some or all of the report. If convicted, Smollett could get three years in prison.

Smollett is now classified as a suspect in the criminal investigation. The two brothers who allegedly helped Smollett with his plan are Ola and Abel Osundairo. The two brothers claim that they were paid by Smollett to attack the actor, shout the slurs, and wrap a rope around his neck. They told the police that they, along with Smollett, drove to the location looking for a place to stage the incident, and even rehearsed it. After the planned attack, Smollett kept the rope around his neck and pointed to a camera which was said to capture everything, but the camera was pointed the wrong way.

This story has garnered lots of attention in the media since it broke. Originally many spoke out against the apparent hate crime and the message it sends. Now, many are angered that the entire thing may have been fabricated. Investigations are still ongoing.
