New Year’s Resolutions

Keira McTyre

New Year’s Resolutions is a tradition where people make resolutions that make their life better or easier. Like, continue good practices, change a personal unwanted habit, or physically change something about you. Some examples of New Year’s Resolutions are getting more organized, get all A’s in classes, get more fit or stronger, eat healthier, learn a different language, etc.

How did the New Years Resolutions get started? Babylonians used to have twelve-day religious festivals called the Akitu, where they would crown a new king or reassure their loyalty to the current king. They would promise the gods that they would repay their debts and return any objects they borrowed. To onlookers, it would seem as though they were making New Year’s resolutions.
